About the Boat: BUILT TO FISH The F/V Seabrooke was designed and built with one purpose in mind – fishing in rough waters. Unlike many Bering Sea boats repurposed from longliners or tankers, the Seabrooke was intended from its inception to haul crab pots from churning Alaskan seas, quickly and safely. Built in California in 1979, it was a state-of-the-art vessel when it launched for the first time and remains so today.

When it first headed out to fish in the early 1980s, the Seabrooke headed straight for Alaska coastal waters, where it fished King crab in the seas around Kodiak Island. The Seabrooke did well, but when that fishery collapsed in the middle of the decade, the Seabrooke quickly sought new grounds and found its new home. Heading to the Bering Sea, the boat took on the Baridi, Opilio and King crab fisheries and remained a top producer in the fleet.

The Seabrooke was still in the upper echelon of Alaska crab boats in 1999, when the Campbell family set its eye on the vessel. Longtime crabber Scott Campbell Sr. bought a stake in the Seabrooke, and three years later his son Junior joined him with an investment. The Campbells ran the boat for its then-owner for six years. Then, in 2005, they bought the Seabrooke outright, with Junior being groomed to take over the wheelhouse from his father. Finally, in 2008, Scott Sr. retired from working at sea, and the Seabrooke moved into its current era: Senior manages the business from home while Junior runs the boat at sea.

All along, the Seabrooke has continued to innovate to stay at the top of the fleet. With heightened wave walls, improved engines and a cutting edge sorting system, the Seabrooke can power through any weather to get to the crab – and keep their haul alive. Employing a “touch the crab once” system of sorting, they get females and juveniles back in the water fast to preserve the next generation of Bering Sea crab – and get those big ol’ males in the tank quickly so they can haul the next pot.
