Superstition: Woman should NEVER be aboard a ship
Origin of this Superstition: British Navy (Way back in the day)
History: Depending on the era and the nation, women were often forbidden from sailing on military vessels. As for merchant ships, that was up to the Captain or the Company. Some say that it was because women were considered bad lick, and that having a women on board a ship when it was at sea would anger the sea gods, bringing on horrible weather and rough water. In some cases, women who were on board a ship were even tossed overboard in order to attempt an appeasement of the gods. (In reality, women were not permitted on board because they were thought of as a 'distraction' to the men and it would disrupt work on the ship.)

Superstition- Knocking on Wood
Origin- I dont know but all my Norwegian family does by this superstition. Id get in trouble if I didnt.

My story: The other day I said "Nothing could possibly be any worse" after a trip cancellation (I really wanted to go) and not 20 minutes later I fell andhurt my ankle pretty bad. NO..i didnt knock on wood after I said the latter.

Superstition: Never say Never
Origin: Not sure
History: usually if someone says something will never happen, or they will never do something, it ends up happening. I can think of many times this has happened to me.

If someone drops a knife, while cleaning fish, and the knife points to the sea, that means good fishing when next you go to sea
and you should always have a knife with a black handle or a hap'penny embedded in the handle it's good luck
If a carving knife falls, the coppers will call.
Do you find this valuable?
