Well I've never been a Capt. on a crab boat, but I have bought cheap beer from a one-armed bootlegger. Does that count? 0  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

I agree with bringing back the farwest. I liked Greg and his wife. I miss seeing Donna on the Maverick. We women like to see other women taking care of our men out there. 8-)

correct! Not just crew members. When I was young and working for a tobacco farmer, he got mad because he bragged to his brother in law about his two good workers (me & my sister) and then we got hired by his brother in law which was better for us because it's on the same street we lived on instead of across town.

Mr Humphrey was SO mad and for quite awhile too!

"I like Eric he had a good boat. I don't like the Hillstrands there childish antics are getting old for me. I am going to miss Phil after this season and do not know if I will watch next year unless the boys will be on the show."
I agree with you completely. Everyone is hating on Keith, but what Jonathan did was completely out of line. And if you want to talk about babies, how about Jonathan's son? Lazy and ambitious is never a good mix. Time for the Hillstrands to go. 1  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

I read on Pop Eater Andy and John were talking about retiring and mentioned having Scotty take over the boat. Jake and Josh are more prepared for that role than Scotty maybe in another 5-10 years he could run the boat but no way is he ready now. 1  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

Umm... kinda? What's a good analogy... How bout riding a mechanical bull in the middle of a busy intersection while knitting a hat every 5 minutes with yarn made of iced steel during all kinds of bad weather and you can't stop till Cap says so. Which could be in an hour or in two days. Of course, as Captain, you have to properly motivate somebody into thinking this is a good idea. :-) 0  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

Don't worry, I know the score. :-) Keith strikes me as somebody that being mean doesn't come naturally so he's not very proficient at it. Like he knows it comes with the Captains chair and it is what people are trained to respond to up there, but he isn't very comfortable with it so it just comes out wrong. The only thing that strikes me as off is during a round table with the other Captains on whether a house fore or aft is better when it comes to safety. Sig said with the house fore, you can protect the guys on deck more. And Keith said -I'd rather be 90 feet from the weather than 10.
If you loose the windows, it can sink the whole boat, yes. But... I don't know it just sounded not quite right.

I honestly think it is personal choice I know my crew preferred 'fore.... the cabin did offer them protection... but you are so right.. blow out the windows and sink the boat.... so I always preferred my cabin a little further back on the boat....on the smaller boats I had steering stations all over the boat tho so I was all over!! 1  out of 1 found this valuable. OK You win this round. I guess buying bootleg beer from a scary man wasn't so terrible after all. One day I'll tell ya about my hay-hauling days though. I think that might just measure up. Do you find this valuable?

Bucking bales the old fashioned way, before they had the hay wagons that picked them up for you? Racing to get it all picked up before a rain storm? Oh yeah, now you are getting there! Now do it on a rocking deck. :-) 0  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

How about a very steep hill, with semi-intoxicated little brother doing the driving? If this don't work I've got more. Do you find this valuable?

"Keith is not my favorite Captain but he certainly adds to the show. I can't believe any one would have something bad to say about Jonathan he was just standing up for his crew and I really enjoyed watching him go off on Keith. Way to go Captain Jon. "
I like the tall brothers...but Keith is like crusty on the outside hiding the part that gets worried ....Sometimes just having the
camera people around can add to the tension. The captains have to look out for them in addition to the crew...and they have to watch some of the stuff they say...and you know how it is living your life under a microscope....I'm delighted that they are all willling to do it. And let's say hats off to the camera people...they are risking equipment AND their lives...What a show...GREAT

Wow you ladies should be on the DC show..it would be great to see the ladies handle such a hard job. I thought it was a job that women were not strong enough to handle because of the weight of the pots. I say we should tell Discovery that we want to see the ladies catch crab. Are your husbands or boyfriends crabbers too,and if not how do they handle you being gone on a boat for so long. Most men dont handle that as well as they expect their women to when they are gone for a long time. Dreamy Do you find this valuable?

Women can and have handled working on crab boats. There are a lot of different variables that make it workable. Women are handicapped by structurally weaker shoulders, yes. But if you'll notice, most of it is about having the right mental attitude. Quite a few guys are not the big and brawny type, but more lean, flexible, quick, and determined. Getting over the gender issues is huge. So much of it depends on which boat/crew you are with and what kind of gear they are using. There is a huge difference between a little hair crab pot and an 8 by, or working for 18 or 24, or 36 hours straight, etc.

I worked on the boats, yes. But my official job was as a biologist/fish cop for Fish and Game. The Captain did not get to tell me when I could sleep. :-) There were a few boats that allowed me to help when my job was done. I was careful not to do anything that would put the boat in legal hot water. But I have landed a few pots, I know how to tie the three different knots that they use up there. I can splice line, mend holes. Bait, etc. Just standing is a great workout!

I did date and marry a crab fishermen. 12 years later, it was time to move on. A case of -great on the boat, sucky at "real life". We were both up there but on different boats most of the time. And then I settled down on land first because I got tired of the forced bulimia. Waiting to hear that he was OK was hard at times. But with most dangerous jobs, no news is usually good news.

Like Clouds... I worked crab boats when I was much younger... could I do it today? heck NO... nor could most men at my age....your body just wears out...I think women handle the long hours better than men...maybe it is that built in mother instinct after kids we get little sleep anyway! But shoulder issues are huge....in 35 years of fishing I have undergone 22 shoulder surgeries...now have 2 brand new titanium shoulders!! I have undergone 18 elbow surgeries and have new elbows too!! and have had carpel tunnel surgery 16 times! I am now waiting for a set of new knees....men also go thru the shoulder and knee issues but I don't know if it is quite as bad a woman they are built stronger on the top....I married while I was fishing....to a non fisherman(he worked a Salmon Tender one year while he was in college)...I raised my kids on the boat...my EX (mine lasted 20 years and I guess my BFF decided she liked my husband more than hers) never stepped foot on my boat.. he only saw pictures! I was a military wife... he was gone alot too..and believe it or not it was good until she stepped into the picture!! It worked....The only problem we had was that I made a WHOLE bunch more money than he did and that really bothered him...It sure was a great run while it lasted tho!!!
