Here's what it means... it's an URGENT distress call.. but not an EMERGENCY:

Transmitting Distress Calls
When grave and imminent danger threatens life or property and immediate help
is required, transmit the MAYDAY Call on Channel 16. Start the call by repeating
MAYDAY three times. Once you have made contact, communicate your boat name,
position (latitude and longitude, or distance from known geographical point), problem,
type of assistance needed, number of people on board (and if any are
injured), safety equipment on board, and identifying characteristics of your vessel
(length, type, color). Monitor Channel 16 for a response.

For non-life-threatening situations such as:
• Running out of fuel
• Mechanical breakdown
Transmit a PAN-PAN (pronounced PON-PON) URGENCY call on Channel 16.
Start the call by repeating PAN-PAN three times. Once you have made contact,
communicate your boat name, position (latitude and longitude, or distance from
known geographical point), and type of assistance required or problem. Identify a
listening frequency and monitor that channel. Cancel PAN-PAN when urgency has
been resolved.

Well that explains that PAN PAN, OMG, i did the same thing as NorskJenter, i google it, but nothing was coming out, well i can say nothing, but a lot of stuff the was not related to that at all.
Taking this a bit out of topic, i happen to see the episode last night, a repeat, where the Wizard crew was trying to put the cover over the pots, but what a disaster........... my heart sank when i started to watch this. Keith was obviously sad, stress and truly scare for his crew member. I was worry about Keith's brother, which i think is such a good hearted person. My tears were non stop. What i scare they had. i wonder how is season will turn out??

Hey guys this is my first post and I wanted to point out something about the call PAN-PAN. The correct pronunciation is PAN-PAN ( /ˈpæn ˈpæn/) The æ is pronounced as in bad, ban, pan or bat. Here is a link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:IPA_for_English) to the International Phonetic Alphabet for English that gives the correct pronunciation for most English vowels. PON-PON is NOT correct and will not be recognized by many agencies around the world.

The USCG has mispronounced the call for years. My late wife, who was a two star U.S. Navy admiral (Rear Admiral upper half) and a holder of a PhD in languages and linguistics (among others) and was fluent in 36 different languages was constantly correcting the USCG but they live in a world of their own. When she was a captain and the commanding officer of a cruiser she instructed her communication section to admonish and correct the USCG after the urgent situation was resolved anytime the error was heard.

When I received my Radiotelephone First Class license with ship RADAR endorsement in 1972 we were also taught to pronounce the call as PAN-PAN. In amateur radio the call is PAN-PAN also.
