Katmai Survivors
Apr 29 2009, 7:31 AM EDT | Post edited: Apr 29 2009, 7:31 AM EDT
It was so hard to watch them recall what happened and these guys obviously have some serious survivor's guilt / post traumatic stress. So, I'm curious, do you think any of the four survivors will return to fishing? It's all some of those guys know, so I wouldn't judge them for it, but I can't imagine how hard it would be to ever step back on a fishing vessel after that...

First I would like to say the Coast Guard deserves a Shout out for being there and saving those guys!!! They did an awesome job! Second I am sure that at least some of the survivors will go out fishing again. It is their life. I have friends and family that fish out there every year and the worry about them coming home safely is a constent thing. So far we have been very lucky!! My heart goes out to all of them and their familys! 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

I think the captain will go back because that is what he knows and being a captain he has been doing this for awhile and will return in time. The two greenhorns I am not to sure about, that is a hell of an experience to just be starting out . I think if it were me I wouldnt go back,I would thank God for my second chance and move on. 0  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

Absolutely! They are heroes and that's just one day at the office. Amazing - can you imagine the pressure to finding signs of life in the water? I couldn't see anything even when they were over the raft and lowering down to the water! Oh, and not knowing if there is a body down there or not... nerves of steel. Very brave men!

Fishermen live with the possibility of capsizing and death anytime they leave port. They know the hazards just like many of us know hazards of what we do. Yet, we become so accustomed to working around and in this situation we don't think about it.
My heart and prayers go out to these brave men. As stated earlier, the survivors do experience guilt for what they should have done.
You need to know that what you DID helped them to the point of their survival as long as they were with you. You guys can not control all situations and need to realize that. When God is ready for us, nothing we do can stop it. Those who perished, I like to think God shielded them from the fear/terror of dying. They knew for a brief moment then God takes and protects them. Anyway, that's what I like to think God is like-merciful and loving.
I think the engineer knew he wasn't going to get out of this situation-that's why he went down stairs on the boat and didn't try to get off. He seemed to accept his fate and was going to go trying to save the boat and crew. What guts this man had!
I'm watching the rerun now, just holding back the tears.
What wonderful, wonderful spirits these guys possess.
You guys did your best.and 4 of you made it out. Now you can work to change some of the problems you experienced while waiting for rescue--you still have a job to do here. The black raft (WRONG! Who can see that from the air) and how to prevent the raft from flipping as theirs did. What happened to Josh's suit that it tore? I hope an investigation is underway.
Bless each of you-

This episode was very heartbreaking for me to watch. It's so sad to see so many lives lost off of one vessel - I bawled my eyes out. Heartfelt prayers to the survivors and to their fallen brothers and their families. 0  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

I agree, not to mention they had to travel seven hours to get to the sinking site. In hurricane force winds. Scaryyyy. It's amazing they found anyone alive. How very sad for all of those who perished. Do you find this valuable?

I think the captain will return... but I'm not so sure about the younger fellows... maybe they'll return in the summer for regular salmon fishing.. then their fears will fade away and they'll go out again in the winter months... hard to say..

We' ll have to figure out a way to get a message to Thom Beers. And tell him inquiring minds want to know. There is a wager riding on this. My opinion, if they go out again, their nuts. Especially, after surviving what they survived. But like Captain John 007 says, "you need to get back up on the horse". Do you find this valuable?
