Question about the share of money.. |

Hey guys, I have a question about the share. For example, on tonights show April 26th 2011 on the Cornelia Marie they were discussing the share of Jake and his brother. Each get 12.5 percent from what they said, and on the paper they had a break down. 515,000 lbs made 570,000. Minus 70 percent to boat?? I don't understand that. How many owners are there on the Cornelia Marie and how do they get paid. Are the expense like fuel, bait, and food included in that or is it taken out after the 70 percent? Then the crew shares are taken out. I just am confused how each, the owners all shares including Jake and brother, the skipper, and Crew make money. Some insight would be great. Also is it basically all the same for the boats on deadliest catch? Thank you in advance.

OK, here is the progression of money once it goes through the purser dock side: Bills (fuel, bait, licenses, docking fees, repairs, etc), then owner, Captain and crew. What the Captain makes is dependent on the contract made with the owner. What each deckhand makes is dependent on the contract with the Captain, usually. Deckhands usually make about 5%, engineers a percentage or two more. And Captains? I don't know honestly. I know the owner gets most of the pie though. So if you have a 5 man deck, that is 25% plus a few more for the engineer so 27% of all the net profits is taken with crew. Let's say Skipper gets 20%. That leaves more than 50% going to the owner.
If you have more than one owner, well it would depend on what they agreed upon. But in the case of the Cornelia Marie, it sounds like the boys get to split 25% of the 50% that the owners rake in on top of their deck wages. But I have wondered why they can't keep crew on there very long, besides the two of them fighting and the boat looking like she's in need of some major overhauls in the shipyard.

Pot Hauling/Rigging Question |

How come everytime a pot comes up to the rail, it has to be spun 180-degrees around the vertical before being lifted over the rail and locked down on the launcher?
It just seems like the bridle could be changed so that the pot came up "right side in". I'm sure there's a reason, but darned if I can figure it out.

It doesn't always come up backwards but often it does. The bridle is tied to the pots so that it will be angled right as it approaches the launcher. Once dogged down, the door would then open upwards so that they can flip it out of the way. If they allowed it to stay upside down, the door would open down and then getting the crab out would be much harder.

It does depend on how much the boat holds but I seem to remember like an 6-8 hour average per tank. Each boat usually has at least 3 tanks so... usually a long night's worth.

I assume that the crab pots are leased/ rented by the boats from a supplier.
Do the processors own them or other, private companies?
What is the fee per pot?

They are owned by the boats. I think the cost ranges but its like 500 to 1000$ a pot.

I Have a Question about Wheelhouses |

In most, if not all ships featured on the show, the windows in front of the captains have circular cut-outs with glass inserts and some type of plastic cylinders in the center of them. I haven't been able to figure out what these are, and what purposes they serve.
Can somebody answer me? My guess was some sort of A/C or Heater, but if that's the case why is it right in the captain's line of sight? Seems like it's deliberately right in front of where the captain would want a clear view.
If somebody knows and wants to enlighten me, I'll be grateful.
Thanks,
Ryan Havely

RE: I Have a Question about Wheelhouses
By: Cloudsinmotion, Aug 10 2010, 4:45 AM EDT
"I haven't seen one working so I don't know if the inner parts spin or not. With everything on a crab boat, it's got to withstand a beating. Intricate things don't have a chance. I've got a picture on my profile from a wheel house on a boat I was on. The window over has heat tape on it. That didn't work either.
I wish I could explain how it feels riding through rough seas. Have you done something similar? I think the biggest eye opener was when I realized I was feeling my heart, being denser than my lungs, being slammed against my ribs. So you can imagine the jarring small connections take. "
I just talked with my brother-in-law whose an engineer and has tons more boat experience than I do. He said it doesn't heat it just spins and is called a spinner. You were right! He said he's seen boats pull into the harbor with two feet of ice all along the front and just that one spot clear, like a tunnel. Can you imagine trying to dock a boat with just that to see through?? Wow....

"Hi Montana ...I have been wondering the same thing when I see a couple of maybe 200 pound guys standing on the crab pile while unloading."
I've been part of plenty of offloads. The crab on top don't die from them standing on them. They only have about about 10 minutes left before the butcher blade anyway.

Hi NorthwesternGirl, welcome aboard..you should get in touch with Sig and he may give a fellow Norwegian a chance on his boat. It looks like we are in agreement on favorite boats on the show, and captains too.

Does anyone know where the crab end up? Are they sent to restaurants around the country, or do they just remain local. I would love to find some and know where my dinner came from.

The processing plants ship them locally, across the country and internationally. They could be in your grocer's freezer section, the Deli section, or any given restaurants...

Where are the pots once the tanks are filled? I've noticed the crews celebrate about going home once the tanks are full, but the pots are not on deck.

In the opening shots we see the cemetery as the crabbers leave Dutch Harbor, is there a memorial for the lost and if so how many crabbers have been lost?

I just started watching the series "Deadliest Catch", when the crabs go into the pots to feast what keeps them from feasting and leaving since the pots are tied securely????? Also if the pots are tied that securely how do they get in there?

"The end of the pot without the door is actually a wedge-shapped funnel made of netting, it is held suspended above the 'floor' of the pot by twine - same as lobster pots"
To add to this; the crab can get in through the funnel but they can't go back out that way. And, chanile, I bet you get as hooked on this show as the rest of us!!!
